Are you tired of falling prey to fad diets only to be left discouraged in the end? Are you unsure of what a fad diet even is? We are here to help clear things up for you! First, let's explain what a fad diet is.
What is a fad diet?
A fad diet usually consists of eliminating specific food groups, restricts certain foods, or restricts you to eating only at specific times during the day. Fad diets also tend to be promoted as a diet where you will experience results in a short amount of time. You may also see a fad diet promote certain foods as “good” or “bad” for you. Some examples of fad diets are the ketogenic diet, juicing diets, intermittent fasting, and the paleo diet.
Do fad diets work?
You can lose weight on a fad diet. However, the reason you are losing weight is not due to the fact that you are cutting out specific foods or eating them at specific times. Weight loss occurs when you eat less calories than the amount of energy you expend. This is called a calorie deficit. A calorie deficit is the basis for every single diet out there and is the main reason you will ever lose weight. Although I do wish there was some magic trick or potion to losing weight. THERE. JUST. ISN’T.
Why we don’t recommend dieting
Diets are not sustainable and are not healthy. With diets, most of the time, people are not able to stay consistent. They’ll lose weight, then go off the diet and go back to eating like they were. Then, they will gain that weight back, if not more this time. This is why diets don’t work long-term, not to mention the damage that can be done to your health with overly restrictive diets. I have personally tried diets that restricted certain foods and they always left me craving to have more of those “bad” foods that the diet restricted me from. In the end, I would just end up over-consuming foods and therefore deter my weight loss efforts. Dieting has NEVER worked for me and has always left me feeling guilty and deprived.
What should you do instead?
Instead of falling into the trap of fad dieting, we suggest eating a balanced, healthy diet. To be clear, when we refer to the word “diet” we mean it in the “abundance of foods enjoyed because they support an individual’s health” context, not a restrictive “you can’t eat that” diet or “you can only eat 1200 calories a day” diet. If you pair a balanced, healthy diet with exercise, you are sure to see even better results on your health journey!
