The holiday that kicks off the season of joy and happiness for many.
I know for me it is a joyous day to share with family that I love.
There is only one downside to it...it is completely an eating holiday. No two ways about it...it is a celebration of eating.
Does this cause anxiety in your life?
If so, let's try this year to make it easier and much less stressful for you.
Are you worried about eating too much and gaining unwanted pounds to round off your year?
Let me help you navigate the holiday with a few tips and strategies that can help you maintain and not gain this year.
1. Be Thankful
First and foremost, always be thankful! It is the holiday of gratitude. No matter what is going on in your life, find what you can be thankful for. If that is hard for you, think of the basics, do you have food, clothing, and shelter? There ya go.... be thankful. From there think of more blessings you may have. In no time I bet you have a great list of things to be thankful for. This will help you to be in a positive mindset coming into the holidays. Keeping a positive outlook helps with motivation, willpower, and overall happiness.
2. Graze Throughout The Day
Instead of worrying about mealtimes and snacks on this wonderful day, just graze. By this I mean to perhaps have a bowl of cereal in the morning to start your day. Then keep on track for eating a small snack between your breakfast and lunch such as a handful of nuts or a piece of cheese or two. Have a light lunch, maybe a salad or half sandwich. You may be getting close to your big Thanksgiving dinner by then and even some may have their big meal for lunch. The whole idea here is to keep yourself from getting too hungry and then having no control of your portions at your big meal of the day. By eating light meals and snacks throughout the day, it will keep you from becoming so hungry that you tend to eat too much too fast at the wonderful feast of the day.
3. Look The Table Over
So now it is dinner time, the big turkey/ham celebration! The table is set and everyone gathers for prayer and thanksgiving before we eat. Take a moment to scan the table or buffet set up before you sit down. See what you know you 'must have' and things you will bypass for other options. This way you have a plan coming into your dinner table time. It helps when you know ahead of time what is there and what dishes you must have and those that you could pass on this time. Perhaps you like it all, we will be talking next about portion control.
4. Practice Your Portion Control
Now is a great time to put into action your portion control skills. What is a healthy portion? Can I just take perhaps a small taste of these wonderful potatoes and gravy and the other goodies? A small sample of everything you find yummy will help you feel satisfied and not deprived. Have a plan coming into the meal that you are going to take small portions of whatever you like. Eat slowly and drink your water while enjoying and savoring the taste and pleasure of the family meal. You will be surprised how quickly your body registers fullness and satisfaction, then you can just sit back and relax and enjoy your family time feeling accomplished that you did not overstuff yourself and all the bad feelings that tend to come with that.
4. Don't Sweat It
All in all, when it is all said and done, do not sweat it! Enjoy your day! If you do not follow these tips to the "T" so be it. It is ONE day. You can return to your regular healthy routine the next day. Don't make it so complicated and unenjoyable that you are miserable. Do your best and forget the rest.
There you have it...4 GREAT ideas to help you manage not only Thanksgiving but the rest of the holiday season as well. Take these tips and apply them for any holiday meal or party you may be attending.

Same technique, practice your portion control and taste the pleasurable foods but try your best to no overindulge.
Food is important to most people. I for one LOVE food and LOVE this time of year! I also know I want to stay on track and I can, if I practice these techniques. I don't forbid myself from enjoying any wonderful food, it's is all a matter of moderation and practice, practice, practice.
