5 Myths Related To Exercise & Aging

At age 57, I am excited to share with you that I am passionate about exercise and taking care of our bodies.


The benefits of regular exercise are very important to us as we age.


It is a BIG part of how we can age positively.


Many may not believe that it matters, but I can tell you, it does!


You have to open your mind and believe in positive aging and that it CAN happen for you!


There are a few myths that we often hear that I would like to correct here today for you.


Here are 5 common myths about exercise and aging that we are going to target in today's blog.


Myth #1 "THERE IS NO POINT IN EXERCISING, I AM GOING TO GET OLD ANYWAY."


TRUTH: Regular exercise makes you look and feel younger. It can help you stay independent longer. It can lower your risk for chronic disease such as, heart disease, cancer, and obesity. It can positively affect mood just as it does for the 20-30 year olds.


Myth #2 "EXERCISE PUTS ME AT RISK OF INJURY"


TRUTH: Regular exercise builds strength and stamina which leads to prevention of bone loss, improved balance, and reduced risk of falls.


Myth #3 "IT WILL BE TOO FRUSTRATING BECAUSE I CAN NEVER BE THE ATHLETE I ONCE WAS."


TRUTH: We do experience changes in hormones, bone density, muscle mass and metabolism. However, you can still achieve a sense of satisfaction and improve your health. Set realistic goals and know that a sedentary lifestyle affects athletic ability much more than biological age.


Myth #4 "I'M TOO OLD TO START EXERCISING."


TRUTH: You are never too old to begin a healthy lifestyle. Adults who start and become physically active later in life show more physical and mental improvement than their younger counterparts. Also, if you have never exercised before or it has been a while, you won’t be held back by recurrent injuries that some active people may well be experiencing.You could say, you have a "clean slate". You have "less miles" on you. Just start slow and progress as tolerated.


Myth #5 "I AM TOO WEAK OR HAVE TOO MANY ACHES AND PAINS. YOU MAY EVEN BE DISABLED.


TRUTH: Increasing your movement can counteract and help to manage your pain, improve strength, and increase confidence. Many older people notice an improvement in strength and vitality after starting and maintaining an exercise regimen. Many notice a reduction in aches and pains as well. If you are disabled, there are chair exercise programs and other options to help you move. The key is to start slowly and progress as tolerated.


These are five common myths that surround us as we try to navigate positive aging.


The truth is, exercise is exactly what you have been looking for in regards to living a healthy lifestyle, being active and healthy well into your "golden years" and beyond!
